LIFE at Our Saviour

Community is important and at Our Saviour we encourage community and celebrate the opportunity to gather in many ways. It is in community that we develop relationships where we can support and encourage each other in Life and in Faith.
Our groups are as diverse as the people within them and whether it is looking for a Playgroup for your child, or a home group to nurture faith, we hope that we a have a place that you can feel welcome!

Community is important to us and we hold regular events that celebrate life and provide opportunity for the community just to get together.

Christmas Carols on the Green

Walk My Way

Our community care reaches beyond our local boundaries and out into our global neighbourhood. We support the work of Australian Lutheran World Service and through them we are able to help communities in need throughout the world.

Walk My Way is a fundraising activity held all over Australia and currently an annual event at Our Saviour. By gathering sponsors and walking up to 20km between Rochedale and Daisy Hill, we have been able to help in the relief effort of cyclone victims in Myanmar, earthquake ravaged communities in Türkiye and have funded education for children in East Africa.

In 2024, ALWS is arranging a Walk-My-Way event in support of the people of Ukraine who continue to suffer in the war with Russia. Join us on Saturday 11 May, 2024 – Walk My Way Ukraine – Brisbane 2024

LIFE at Our Saviour

There are a variety of groups that respond to the needs of different life stages. Whether it’s new parents looking for a supportive playgroup, teenagers seeking peers to live life with, or older people understanding their changing life circumstances. There’s sure to be a group that serves your need.

Playgroup (0-5years)

Our Saviour Playgroup is for children from birth to preschool and their carers.

Playgroup meets weekly, Thursday mornings of the school term, at the Rochedale Community Centre, Farmers Road, Rochedale, from 9am to 11am. It is led by some willing volunteers who provide a range of activities for the kids, including thematic arts and craft and story telling.

Importantly, Playgroup provides a place for mums, dads and carers to get together with others for support and encouragement.

Under 5’s (0-5 years)

Growing Kids (5-14 years)

Both of these programs provide activities and discussion time in matters of faith and life.

Our Saviour Youth (OSY) (12-18 years)

Our Saviour Youth (OSY) is for high school aged young people – and there is invitation to older members of our community who may wish to assist in the running of OSY.

OSY an inclusive community for the young, and the young at heart. They meet every Friday night (during the school term) for activities, games, music and worship, to connect with God and in community with those around us, as we learn and grow together. At OSY, we’re invited to take part in a safe space, full of love, joy and belonging.

Young Adults (18-30ish)

On any given Sunday you will find young adults alive and active in Our Saviour church life. This is not just because we value young adults, but because we value active participation by all people in our community. Young adults in our church are often taking part alongside older members of our community; from leading music, to serving coffee, reading scriptures or offering prayers, distributing communion or even providing a message in our morning or evening services. We have many young adults involved in other ways, including on Governance Council, Finance Team and planning and delivering other necessary ministries in our community.

Parents

Being a parent or carer is an important and God-ordained life vocation and one which requires a life-time commitment. The good news is that we are not alone in our parenthood endeavours and at Our Saviour we hold strongly to the notion that it takes a village to raise a child. In the various programs and activities of Our Saviour, you will often see parents and carers engaged in discussion while they take part in the activities or simply wait whilst their children are actively engaged.

We are also aware that many families are impacted by a more transient society, meaning that extended families are separated. We are blessed with a diverse and intergenerational community with many of our members willing to act as pseudo aunts and uncles where family networks are otherwise unavailable.

You’ll find these intergenerational networking opportunities at most of our regular activities. e.g. Sunday Worship and morning teas, our Sunday morning children’s programs and Dance rehearsals, our regular Sunday Brunches, Playgroups and especially at our monthly Messy Church. You might even like to join one of our Life groups where family commitments are also valued.

Retirees

Retirement means different things to different people and within our community we have a wide range of retirement expressions. Some continue in paid employment while others serve in various voluntary roles. Some engage heavily in travelling while others stay closer to home. Some are involved in community groups and activities such as Probus or U3A while others get busy in church life in bible study groups or service activities.

This stage of life often encompasses significant change and we have a number of groups and individuals who together provide love, support and care through growing relationships and sharing experiences.

You may like to join us in new LIFE morning teas, Picnic Groups, midweek worship, bible studies or community service activities, or perhaps we can help you to connect with others who can introduce you other community groups or activities.

Getting together with others who share life’s joys and passions helps us to connect as a community of support and encouragement. Skill levels are not important, care and compassion are!

Music Teams

Music is a large part of Our Saviour community life and we have a large number of music teams who get together regularly to share their gifts. Many of these groups contribute to worship and community life, but if that’s not your thing, that’s ok! We’d love for you to get to know us first!

Arts and Crafts

For the craftier members of our community! Join us in creating meaningful cards that are sold with proceeds supporting the welfare provided by Our Saviour.

Here’s one of the stories from our Craft Group:

“One day at Craft Group one of the ladies saw Aileen working on a Baptismal quilt-top for me and asked if I had any more. She said she would be happy to do some too as she did not have anything in particular she wanted to work on. Willy has since completed 3 and another lady has finished one as well. Neither of these ladies have any contact with our church except through Craft and Maria comes to the Picnic Group. I have been happy of the help and they are reading bible verses while they are stitching which may lead to something.”

Shed @ Work

‘Shoulder to shoulder’ is one of the ways that blokes get together and share life with one another. In Col’s shed at Mt Cotton a group of our blokes, and some of our ladies, spend time together, shoulder-to-shoulder as they work on projects together.

If you have handy skills and wish to share them with others, or perhaps learn from someone with perhaps greater experience, come along to our Shed @ Work.

Blanket Knitters/Crocheters

Over the years, our blanket ministry has become very popular and wide spread! Blankets and knitted squares have arrived from all over Queensland to be knitted together and shared with our community who are more susceptible to the cold of winter. In sharing these gifts, we have distributed them broadly and can be assured that they are well spread around.

The blankets are a physical reminder of the love that surrounds us, particularly at those times when we feel cold and alone and particularly vulnerable.

Exploring faith.

LIFE at Our Saviour

If you are looking to learn more about Jesus and living a life of faith that responds to all that God has done you can join one of many groups that gather to explore life and faith together. Groups meet at different times and regularities and cater for young and old and in-between.

Sunday School

Our Sunday children’s ministries cover three age groups: Under 5’s, Junior Primary and Upper Primary/Middle School.

‘Under 5’s’ is a song and dance celebration, ‘Growing Kids I’ explores bible stories while the senior group, ‘Growing Kids II’ looks more closely at the Catechism and what this means for our lives.

These ministries take place immediately after Communion during our worship from approximately 9.30-10.00am.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Multi-age family Groups

As a church that sees itself as “Growing Young” we have many opportunities where young and old can connect and engage. This is particularly true of some of our LIFE groups that take place in people’s homes, often with consideration of the needs of children and parents. One such example is a group where parents may alternate for each gathering, swapping roles of child minding and participation. This also means that the content of the evenings is adapted for this changing attendance.

Confirmation Classes

Confirmation continues to be a rite of passage for teenagers within our congregation. Our Confirmation program runs over 4 terms, beginning with Youth Alpha and then progressing to a more in-depth exploration of the new and old testaments of the Bible, the live of Jesus and Luther’s Small Catechism.

The intention of Confirmation is to help our young people understand what it is that believe so that can publicly share that this is the faith that they believe in, and will carry with them throughout their lives, by the grace and mercy of God.

At the end of the 12 month program, the young people are invited to share their faith with the congregation and celebrate all that God has done, and continues to do for them in their lives and in their faith.

Whilst there is a program that we follow, Conformation is about building relationships, and much of what we do is about helping the young people understand that they are not alone in this journey and that they can share their questions, their doubts and their joys with many others.

Our Confirmation groups are normally from Schools years 7 – 9, but we are always open to discussing personal needs and circumstance and will start an adult group if interest in shown.

Our Saviour Youth - Encounter

Our Saviour Youth meet every Friday night and throughout each term regular nights are dedicated to growing in faith and having discussions on matters of Christian life and faith.

The ‘Encounter’ nights do change from term to term, so have a look at the OSY Facebook page or calendar to see when the next Encounter is coming up.

Young Adult Groups

Thursday Ladies

Thursday ladies is, as the name suggests, a group of ladies who gather on Thursdays for a time of prayer, praise and bible study. They meet at Doorways on Thursday mornings of the school term from 9.30 – 11.30.

Here’s a short history of these group that has been meeting since 1986.

I believe that Michael W Smith’s song: Ancient Words expresses why as a group have continued to meet over many years. “ We have come with open hearts, Oh let the ancient words impart”.
When we joined Our Saviour in 1986 there was a group of women meeting in homes for Bible study, worship and prayer. This group was led by Corinne Lindsey.
Some years later, Cherry Alison and I took over leadership and we met in St John’s hall ( This was while OS and St John’s were in the one parish). The Prayer Chapel at RLC and downstairs at Doorways have also housed our group. Where we meet is only one part of of what makes a group function well.
Involvement in congregational activities such as concerts and service activities included regularly cleaning the original kitchen in the chapel have also been part of our background.
As an outreach we also hosted Alpha during our regular meetings and this resulted in several new members.
Over the years we have used a variety of study guides and various methods. Mostly members have been wanting to grow in faith so studies were not teaching as much as exploring together.
From the beginning prayer has been a central component of the weekly get togethers . When the group was larger, small groups allowed time for personal sharing and ministry for all members. There were also times when we committed to pray for each other during the week by using prayer calendars. We also supported the Bible reading ministry to Preps at RLC for several years.
We have been blessed over the years by having ladies to accompany our Praise and Worship.
I have found that Bible study, Prayer, Praise and Worship, Fellowship, and Service and weekly meetings are all important elements in successful groups.

Men’s Groups

Men’s Breakfast’s offer 3 unique opportunities relating to the interests and passions of the blokes involved:

Men’s Bible Study Breakfast – Saturdays, 6.30am based around exploration of God’s Word over a morning breakfast.
Men’s Prayer Breakfast – Saturdays, 6.30am, identifying and praying for community needs.
Men’s BIG Breakfast – Monthly on the second Saturday at Redeemer Chapel: a hearty ‘nosh-up’ that brings the bible study and prayer groups together. There may be guest speakers, or members of the group who may share some of their own lives and insights with the group for mutual support and encouragement.

Serving the community.

LIFE at Our Saviour

In sharing Jesus love, we support others in our community who have specific needs or who may just need a hand or a friendly chat over a coffee.

GO2 service group (lawn mowing & garden odd jobs)

GO2 is our service arm, providing responses to community need. This is the group we “Go To” when things need to be done!

Over the years, this has included:

- serving the needs of our Helping Hands van and the community it serves.
- providing BBQ’s, often associated with raising funds in response to particular needs.
- mowing lawns
- holding working bees
- assisting with house and yard clean-ups
- assisting with moving or responding to housing and furniture needs

HOSTS (working with ALWS …)

HOSTS or Hands of Our Saviour Together in Service have been the social justice arm of our congregation for many years. As a group they work together with Australian Lutheran World Service, keeping our church family aware of developments within our global neighbourhood and offering opportunities for us to demonstrate our love, support and care through events and activities that raise our awareness and raise much needed funds for aid.

Over the years, this has been through: Trivia Nights, Walk My Way, Gifts of Grace, guest speakers and more.

Brekky Club

Every Wednesday of the school term we have a willing band of helpers, supporting our local primary school by sharing breakfast with the students.

Together with other local churches, and in partnership with the school Chappy, this is a valuable service for the students of the community, helping them to maintain concentration and improves their educational outcomes.

Helping Hands

In 2014, Our Saviour, in a service-learning partnership with Redeemer Lutheran College, commenced a community service by running a little yellow van. Every Friday night the van would visit local community sites, sharing love, support and care through a friendly cup of coffee and warm conversation. Today the van continues to serve the community being well supported by the our church family and staff and families of the college. The little yellow van has been replaced by a larger vehicle, but the friendly conversation continues.

There are opportunities every Friday night to take part in the van outing, or you may make donations to the ministry or take part in some of the contributing ministries. Knitting / Baking / Food and Can Drives / Volunteering.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for being involved in life at Our Saviour. From time to time, there may be events that have a cost, but these will always be promoted in advance and you are free to join us if you wish. Other contributions to the organisation of Our Saviour and the wider Lutheran Church are purely by free will. We hope that you might be inspired by the love of Jesus and help us, by contributing financially, to share this love with our community, only if and when you you are able.

Will my children be safe at Our Saviour?

We take the safety of all children and vulnerable people very seriously. We want everyone who is involved with Our Saviour Lutheran Church to find the rich and full life that God wants for us and to do so we follow the 10 Child Safety Standards set out by the Lutheran Church of Australia.

This includes requiring that all leaders involved with children’s programs have a BlueCard and have completed ‘ChildSafe’ training.

We’re not involved with Redeemer Lutheran College, can we still attend activities of Our Saviour?

Absolutely! We have a large number of people involved with Our Saviour who are not part of the Redeemer Lutheran College community. We have a strong relationship with the College and are grateful for the use of the facilities made available to us. We also respect that during school hours, our use of the facilities will be limited and must be managed appropriately.

How do I get involved as a Volunteer at Our Saviour?

There are many opportunities to be involved as a volunteer and we welcome your participation. There is an opportunity for everyone!

We value our volunteers and the service that they provide, and in order for us to maintain our care for the community we need our volunteers to be appropriately trained and appointed.

We will help you through the process and provide you with all that you need.

We will help you to apply as a volunteer and take steps to ensure we can maintain a safe place for all and meet our legislative requirements. You will need a BlueCard and LCA Safe Church Training. This is mandatory for any adults in church leadership roles and those involved in programs that include children.
